OH DEER! OH MY!
The Deer vs Motorcycle Poker Run and Picnic Fundraiser was held in July 2023 for the a fellow member that was riding a motorcycle when a deer ran into him! He was hospitalized with major leg damage, and this event brought in funds to assist with his medical expenses. James City County, VA Fire Station #4 stopped by with a truck and ambulance and Riverside LifeVac Helicopter flew in for a lengthy visit. The day was a huge success.

On June 22, members of the Heart of Community Committee participated in the first annual fishing trip for the
Boys to Men Mentoring Virginia organization. Nine mentors and thirty young men set out early that morning for
the West Point Fishing Pier. HOC Co-chairman Charles Carter said, “The joy and excitement on the young men’s
faces was priceless. Some young men were fishing for the first time. It is a great feeling knowing we provided
some fond memories for these young men to cherish forever.” He would also like to send a special thanks to Ro-
land Jr. and Roland Sr. for taking time out of their day to help with this endeavor.
Many committee members and other volunteers, both members and non-members, worked together to make this
trip a success, from planning, to organizing fishing gear, arranging transportation, packing lunches and supplies.
Thank you to the following HOC Committee members: Charles Carter, Lisa Payne, Ann Marie Carmody, Burt Cragg, Brenda Stone, Vicki Carter, DJ Gordon, Kasey Binion, and Sean Busch.
Thank you to our lodge volunteers: Robert Lee, Chris Wittan, and Mike Poh with Pat’s Sporting Goods. Thank you to the boys and mentors of BTMVA for the opportunity to be a part of this special day.

Twenty Special Olympics athletes from western Virginia competed in Virginia Beach recently. Portsmouth Moose Lodge 898 sent pizza dinners to them and their eight chaperones at their hotel and also hosted to them for a second dinner along with DJ entertainment at Portsmouth Moose Lodge.
Hampton Roads Moose Legion #199 (HRML 199) donated $500 towards funding the dinners. VMA District 1 President Dave Herrin donated his DJ services.
It was a really great event. Great job HRML 199, Dave Herrin, and Portsmouth 898!
